Fashion Fridays: DIY Ruffle Tee

My friend MyLyn (you can check out her blog here) posted a link to this tutorial on how to make your own ruffled tee.  I got so excited when I saw it, because I knew just the shirt to make-over with this project.  So, instead of just reading the tutorial and looking at the pictures and thinking to myself, "That looks so cool, I should do that," and then never doing it, I sat down while my son was taking his nap and I did it.  Here's a look at what I did today:

It started with two shirts.  I didn't get as good of a deal as Sachiko from Tea Rose Home, but they were a still steal at only $4 each at Target.  I do love Target.

And then one shirt became strips of shirt.  

Which were turned into ruffles.  Here I have the collar ruffle done and attached to the shirt, and all the front ruffles gathered and waiting to be sewn on.

The finished product (Sorry, it looks kinda gray in this picture but I promise it's black.)

I am quite pleased with how it turned out.  I even did a little flower (I'm thinking of doing one more later.)  And all this was sewn by hand, as I can't use a sewing machine to save my life : )!  It probably would have been a lot faster had I used my sewing machine.  That is one of my resolutions for the year-to get to know my sewing machine better.  So you'll probably be seeing more sewing projects from me in the months to come.  I'm thinking my next one will be this-another cute project from Tea Rose Home.  Check it out along with the other awesome stuff on her blog!  I have definitely been inspired to do some more sewing!

Hand-made Goodie of the Week: Tile Coasters

I made these for two of my sisters-in law as Christmas presents (and I loved them so much, I made a set for myself.)  There's super-customizable, super-cute and super-easy.

You'll need:
4 4x4 ceramic tiles (think bathroom wall tiles)-color doesn't matter because you'll be covering them up
Scrapbook paper, photos, stamps, whatever you'd like to use decorate your tiles (if using stamps, make sure you use a fast-drying, permanent ink to avoid smears)
16 small felt feet (4 for each tile)
Mod Podge
Glue stick
Sponge brush
Utility knife

Cut your paper (or photos) to fit your tile (you might want to cut the paper just a little bigger than the tile, then you can trim it up after the mod podge dries.)  With glue stick, cover back of paper completely with a good, thick layer of glue.  Press down firmly onto tile, smoothing out any bubbles.  Using the sponge brush, brush on a thin layer of mod podge-this is what seals your coaster and makes it water proof.  Let dry for about 20 minutes and then apply a second thin layer.

Once it's completely dry, trim up any edges that are hanging off.  Apply the felt feet to the bottom, one in each corner.  This keeps the tile from scratching up surfaces.

And that's it!

Hand-made Goodies: Quilted Ball Ornaments

Happy New Year all!  I took a bit of a hiatus to enjoy the holidays with my family, move into our new place and get everything to unpacked. With all that taken care of, I'm launching off my hand-made goodies feature.  Each Tuesday (til I run out of things that I've made and given as gifts ( : ) will feature a new hand-made item that also makes a great gift.

To kick things off, I'm going to back-peddle a bit and show you some hand-made Christmas ornaments that make great gifts-for teacher, friends, co-workers, really anyone you want!

Quilted Ball Ornaments

You'll need:
Small styrofoam balls
Fabric scraps (preferably christmas-y fabrics that look good together)
Regular butter knife
Ribbon

Using the knife, take the fabric scraps and poke them into the ball in random shapes.  Repeat all over the ball til it is entirely covered in fabric.  Cut of a good-sized piece of ribbon (about 6-7 inches,) knot ends together and poke knot down in the ball (if you want, you can put a little dab of hot glue on the knot before poking it down.)  That's it-you're done!!
