Hand-made Goodie of the Week: A Piece of the Beach

I think I'm just about caught up.  Whew!

This week's hand-made goodie is easy-peasy, but I love it so.

As I've mentioned, I love the beach.  It is seriously one of my favorite places to be.  So, logically, a girl like me with a love of the beach would want a little piece of it at home.  I've got a whole shoebox full of shells that I've collected over my lifetime.  I wanted a cute way to display them and add some decor to my bathroom (which, I have decided, is now beach-themed.)

I've been adding little touches here and there-I dressed up these jars with some cute ribbon that matches our shower curtain

I know it's kind of hard to tell, but the blue dots on the ribbon are the same color blue as the middle of the flowers on the curtain.
But I still felt that it needed something.

I bought this flat-ish round vase at Walmart for $2.  On our last beach trip, I scooped up a bag full of dry sand to use in the vase (my husband was looking at me like I was nuts.)  I filled it about 1/3 full then added the shells.  And that was it.  The whole project took 5 minutes (probably less.)  And all it cost me was $2!

Nothing really impressive, but it makes me happy when I see it because it reminds me of the beach : )

What I'm Wearing #5

It's Wednesday and that means it's that time again.  Time to take a peek at my fashion choices as of late.  I've been really slacking when it comes to taking pictures lately.  I've only got 3 outfits to show you all today.  I promise to do better this week : )

I like to feel comfortable without sacrificing cuteness when I'm out running errands.  This outfit makes me feel put together with minimal effort.
Black and white tank:Full Tilt from Tilly's
White tee: Forever 21
Dark skinny jeans: thrifted American Eagle
Flip flops: Rainbows from Pac Sun

Necklace: hand-made by me
The "B" is for my son and I plan on getting the heart engraved with his birth date.

In case you haven't already noticed, I pretty much live in my jeans.  I just love them so much, but I do get tired of the monotony of them, so I like to mix it up with my other pants.

Blue dress: Forever 21
Mustard yellow skinnies: thrifted Forever 21
Long necklace: Forever 21
Brown flats: Target
Wow, I didn't do this on purpose, but almost everything in this outfit is Forever 21.  I can't help it, I just love that store!

This is what I wore to church this past Sunday.  I love this skirt!  The first picture cut off the top of my head and the second one cut off my feet, so I'm including both so you can see the whole outfit : ) Though in neither can you see what I did with my hair, which I was really proud of : (  I did a small french braid that started at my part and went across to my right ear.  I'm planning on trying out again soon, so I promise to take a better picture of it.

Black ruffled shirt: Target, with the ruffles added by me
Striped skirt with black belt: Candies for Kohls
Silver Y necklace: Avon

And that's it for this week.

My Two Cents

I'm horribly behind.  I know.  The whole Blogger debacle last week and the three day weekend kinda knocked me off schedule.  And today, instead of playing catch up, I'm deviating even more from the "schedule."

I usually don't do this, but I've had some things that have been on my mind for the last week or so.  Writing usually helps and sometimes I just need to rant a little.  So, please, bear with me.

A high school friend of mine posted a link to this article from Time magazine on her Facebook.  It's titled "Heavy Drinkers Outlive Non-drinkers" and her little comment about it was "Interesting..."  I clicked on the link and read the article, because I wanted to see how it the world someone could possibly claim that, let alone "prove" it.  The article, in my opinion, provides no conclusive evidence to it's claim (I'll get to why I think that in a minute.)  I commented on her link that I thought it was bogus and shared an example that I will also share with you all.  My paternal grandfather is a twin.  His twin brother, my Uncle Donnie, was a heavy, heavy drinker for the majority of his life. The last time I saw him was when I was 17.  We had all gone up to Syracuse for my grandparents' 50 wedding anniversary and my dad and my uncle had thrown my grandparents a big party-it was more like a fancy family reunion.  We went to see him a couple of days before the party and he had no clue who my dad was, even after my dad said he was Doug's son (Doug is my grandpa.)  He had no recollection of my father or even of his own twin (when my dad had mentioned Doug, my Uncle Donnie was like, Doug who?)  I took a picture of them together at the party and my Uncle Donnie looks at least 10 years older than my grandpa.  Sadly, he died a few years later, from pickling of the brain, among other things.  My grandpa, on the other hand, just celebrated his 84th birthday last month.

And that was all I had to say.  Well, she comes back at me like I just dissed her personally by saying I don't agree with the article and was all, "It's a scientific study, rooted in research, go read the related article, it has all the facts right there" blah blah blah (I wish I had thought ahead and copied the conversation so you could see what was actually said, because once I unfriended her, I can't see anything I've posted on her wall.)  This sparked a fight back and forth that ended in me unfriending her on Facebook.  I'm sure that kinda sounds childish, but I will explain my reasoning for this.  What started as me having an opposing opinion turned into a full-on attack on my intelligence from this girl, which even included her insinuating that I thought that anyone who went to the University of Texas, which is where the doctor who conducted the study is from, is an ignorant hack and has a faulty education!  She even named a friend of hers specifically ("Maybe it's just UT.  Everyone who goes there must just be a hack.  Sorry, Whitney!"  I paraphrased a bit, but that was the gist of it)-like I know this girl and would insult her education!  I never said anything about the credibility of the person in charge of the study or of the institution that he works for!  In the responding remarks I made after her coming back with "it's rooted in science," I simply pulled information from the article that coincided with my opinion.  I never made it personal against her.  Because it wasn't.  I was merely disagreeing with what the article stated.  From the way she lashed back at me, you would think that she was the one who wrote the article or even more, conducted the study.  And she got all petty and nasty about it, too.  I'm sure she and her "intellectual" friends had a nice laugh at my expense and I don't care.  It got to the point where I didn't even reply anymore to her comments because I wouldn't have been nice.  I didn't want to stoop to her level or give her any justification for her actions.  It was time to walk away.  I don't need negativity like that in my life.  I don't need someone who claims to be my friend one moment and the next, talks down to me like I'm an idiot.  To me, that's not a real friend.  Real friends don't treat you like you are less of a person than they are, for whatever reason. be it looks, intelligence, money or standards.  And that's why I decided to remove her from my friends.

I've known this person since we were in the 5th grade.  She has always acted like she was too good for our group of friends, and that we should feel all special that she graced us with her presence.  She always acted like she was so much smarter than the rest of us, so much prettier and well-to-do because she wore brand name clothes.  She tried so hard to get in with the popular crowd in our high school (which bombed) and just never seemed to be happy with the real friends that she had.  It's just been one thing after another with her and I guess I thought as we grew up and became adults, that she'd mature and grow out of it.  Apparently I was wrong.  This little incident just proved that.  All I did was voice an opinion that was contrary to hers and all hell broke lose.

I can have an opinion and it can be different from yours and we can still be nice to each other.  It doesn't make me wrong and you right or me right and you wrong.  It just means that we disagree on something.  And that's ok.  You don't have to be nasty or mean or condescending because I think differently than you.  That's NOT how friends treat each other.

Now, on to why I think that article is hogwash.

If you conduct a study to find out who will live longer, drinkers or non-drinkers, wouldn't you get more accurate results if you used actual non-drinkers?  I would think that you would use people who have actually never drank than former alcoholics.  It would probably pad the numbers a bit.  They claim that "One important reason is that alcohol lubricates so many social interactions, and social interactions are vital for maintaining mental and physical health."  So, there are no actual benefits from the alcohol itself, but from the activities taking place while drinking.  I know plenty of social people who never drink.  It's like they're saying if you don't drink, all you do is sit at home, alone, and wallow in self-pity, which will kill you sooner than someone who goes out and parties every night.  They also claim that alcohol is a good stress reliever.  True, it might be. But I can think of at least a dozen other ways to relieve stress that are much better for you.  And, if heavy drinking is so good for you, why do people die from alcohol poisoning?

There's even this little disclaimer: "The authors of the new paper are careful to note that even if drinking is associated with longer life, it can be dangerous: it can impair your memory severely and it can lead to nonlethal falls and other mishaps (like, say, cheating on your spouse in a drunken haze) that can screw up your life. There's also the dependency issue: if you become addicted to alcohol, you may spend a long time trying to get off the bottle."  Notice the big "IF" there?  That and there are a lot of variables that they left out.  They used a sample group who had needed outpatient services within 3 years of being selected for this study.  To me, that's a big red flag.  These individuals obviously had pre-existing health conditions.  Also, there is never a mention of these people's lifestyle habits.  They might have had a bunch of "non" drinkers, but what if half of that group were heavy smokers.  What if they were severely over-weight?  What if they had lifelong health problems?  These are all things that I would think would be important to consider in a study like this.  All they mention as contributing factors are "socioeconomic status, level of physical activity, number of close friends, {and} quality of social support."  The fact that they claim that people from lower socioeconomic statuses drink less (or not at all) makes me laugh.  Have they never seen the homeless guys asking for change so that they can go buy some booze?  Not that I'm implying that all homeless people are alcoholics, because I know they're not, but a large number are.  In fact, a large number of poorer people drink as a way to escape from their money woes.  "It's true that those who abstain from alcohol tend to be from lower socioeconomic classes, since drinking can be expensive."  Tell that to all of the poor college who waste their tiny paychecks on alcohol to throw parties to impress their friends.  Basically, to me, this article leaves a lot of important questions unanswered and makes a lot of lofty assumptions.  I think it's a little ridiculous to claim that a person who will never touch a drop of alcohol will die sooner than a binge drinker.  For the record, I have nothing against people that drink.  I don't drink, it's against what I believe in.  But I don't judge people that do drink, I don't think less of them nor do I think that drinking makes them bad people.  They just have different standards and beliefs than I do.  There's nothing wrong with that.

So, what do you think?  Was I just being silly and too sensitive?  What do you think about the article and its claims?  Am I way off in thinking it's wrong?  I really do want to hear what you think.

Who's That: Cup of Delight

I have a wonderful guest for you all to meet today.  I swapped blogs with the lovely April from Cup of Delight today and she's here sharing some of her awesome projects with you all!

A little bit about me: That is not my dog. I wish it was. I live in North Carolina with my sweet, handsome husband of 8 months and 28 days. I am on full-time staff with a Christian ministry and spend most of my days with my "kids"- a bunch of crazy college students. I do want real kids one day. I am a kid., actually-I get way too easily excited. I have way too many hobbies, so I write about some of them on my blog. I especially enjoy crafts and decorating! You can read more about me on my blog, if you'd like.

Today the wonderfully talented Courtney and I are swapping blogs! Here are some of my favorite projects-hope you enjoy them!

These are such a great gift for a new Mommy and baby-and they are simple to make!

I saw this idea all over the place, but decided to jazz up the idea a bit! (sorry for the flash-the lighting in my apartment is terrible!)

Otherwise known as, "How I girlified the NC State Room"

I do an awful lot of baby crafts for a person without a baby! This is another cute gift idea.

I redid our ugly, cheap bulletin board and made it pretty!

And for Fall, one of my favorite and most complimented (and easiest, but shhhh...) recipes:

The first time I made this was amusing. But, it is so yummy!!

I hope you will come visit me at Cup of Delight! I have some fun projects coming up that I can barely wait to share!

Thanks, Courtney, for having me as a guest! I am honored! And I realized just now that I used a lot of exclamation points.

Have a Delightful Day!

Who's That: Sweetie Pie Pumpkin Noodle

Sorry I've been absent this week.  It's been busy and on top of that, Blogger has been giving me fits.  I don't know if it's just me and my computer or if it's actually a problem with Blogger, but its working now and that's all that matters.

Today I'm more than happy to introduce you all to the lovely Jackie from Sweetie Pie Pumpkin Noodle.

Her blog as one of the first I came across when I started venturing into bloggy-land, even before I started Scraps and Scribbles.  If you love interior design and all things lovely, Jackie's blog is the place to be.  She also has an awesome shop, One Sweet Find, where she sells her awesome interior finds.

She let me interview her so you all could get to know her.

My name is Jackie, I am 28 (pushing 29) years old.  I married my high school sweetheart eight years ago and am currently a stay-at-home-mom to two girls: Kara (2) and Natalie (4).  We live in California (born and raised-nothing comes close to the Golden Coast!) and all love going to the beach and visiting my parents who live in the wine country.

Tell me a little bit about your blog.  What prompted you to start Sweetie Pie Pumpkin Noodle and why?

When I had my first daughter almost five years ago, I went from working full time to being a stay at home mom.  The adjustment was really hard for me because I really missed the adult social interaction that I always had at work.  One day I was google-ing (is that a word?) something online and a blog popped up in the search results.  I clicked on the link, not knowing what it was, and the rest is history.  I was hooked.  One blog lead to another, then another and pretty soon I had a ton of blogs I was following and commenting on on a regular basis.  I thought to myself, this is so great getting to be inspired by and connecting with others from all over the world, all from the comfort of my own home!  Which is where I was stuck all day anyway! So never one to be left out, I started my own.

My blog has evolved over the years.  At first I really had no idea what I was doing, but I just started posting things that inspired me, usually in interior design, fashion and entertaining.  I also threw in some stuff about my personal life.  Today the topics remain the same-with a focus on fun and fresh finds in interior design, fashion and DIY.  Oh, and to explain my blog name, it was actually the nickname I gave to my first born.  One morning I walked into her room to get her from her crib and I blurted out "Good morning, my little Sweetie Pie Pumpkin Noodle!"  I have no idea where that came from, but it stuck.  And since I had no idea what I was doing when I started my blog, I named it that.  Definitely not what I would choose now, but at least it's memorable!

What inspires you?  What type of things do you find yourself being drawn to?

Well, definitely blogs.  I have never been more inspired than by the things I see on blogs.  Other than that: being by the ocean, magazines, reading, flickr.com, houzz.com.  Oh, and now I find tons of inspiring things on twitter too!  Gotta love the interwebs.

What are your favorite things to create?

Little vignettes around my home.  I've blogged about vignettes before here, and it is one of my favorite things to do-mix and match and rearrange items throughout my home.

What have you enjoyed most about blogging?

Definitely the friends I have made.  I've had the opportunity to meet several in person and it is such a fun experience.

What do you hope your readers take away from your blog?

I keep it light and entertaining on my blog, and I hope my readers leave feeling like they have a fun new idea for their home, wardrobe or life.

If you could blog swap with any one person for a day, who would it be and why?

That is nearly impossible to answer!  Off the top of my head- Mrs. Lillien
-she has such a great concept for her blog, it is truly genius.

I collect quotes for my blog.  Do you have a favorite quote you'd like to share?

Oh yes, I love a good quote!  I post one every week as well according to my yearly theme.  Last year it was "Simplicity" and this year it is "Think Bright Thoughts".  If I had to choose one, my favorite quote is "Time flies whether you are having fun or not." -Mary Engelbreight.  A nice reminder to just have fun with life already!

What one skill do you wish you were better at?

Hands down: cooking.  I'm horrible at it.  Not at all creative-I can only follow a recipe and even then I have issues.  It just all overwhelms me.

How would you describe your personality?

Fun-loving, sarcastic, giggly, and I'm a big worry-wart.

What is your favorite product that you have reviewed?

A Shabby Apple dress.  There ended up being a really cool story that came about from wearing the dress that you can read in my review

What advertiser would you like to work with given a chance?

Hmmm, probably the stores I shop at most like Forever 21 and Target! Ha!

What is one thing you wish you had known before you started you blog?

That it would actually become successful and I would have to be saying the name out loud!

I know one thing a lot of us mom bloggers struggle with is balance.  How do you balance blogging, family and free time?

It is tough.  I try to do all my blogging after the girls are in bed, but even then I feel guilty because my husband is getting neglected.  I try and squeeze it in here and there where I can.  I also pop in twitter or my facebook page occasionally during the day, which only takes a minute or two and keeps me up on what is going on.

List your 3 favorite blog posts that you've written.

My favorite posts are those that get the most comments or interest-because isn't that what all bloggers live for?

My first would be the post I did on my daughter Kara's nursery.  It was featured on a variety of websites like Oh Dee Doh and Spearmint Baby, and that is really how I got my big break so to speak.

Second is a post I did early on as well that somehow still gets the most hits-it's titled "I've Found My Interior Design Soul Mate" and features a home that I am still in love with today-and that says a lot!

Last it would be a recent "What I Wore" post I did.  I have always been shy about doing one, but since I loved it so much on other blogs I thought I would give it a whirl.  I got a ton of sweet comments on it, and that was a total confidence booster!

Tell me a bit about One Sweet Find.  What do you look for in the items you sell?

I've always been drawn to interior design, and several years ago I discovered the joys of thrifting and antiquing to find unique ans affordable items for my home.  Pretty soon it was all I could think about and became my favorite hobby.  I realized that I could join it with my other favorite hobby: blogging, and create an online shop filled with my findings.  I love the idea that something I have carefully selected, and in some cases restored, will make its way to a new home and be loved all over again.  I definitely feel like I "save" these items and give them a new life!

As far as I what I look for when I am out hunting-my number one criteria is that I love it and would use it in my own home.  My style is broad-I love all things Hollywood Regency, Chinoiserie, "Country Chic" and beachy.  So those are the types of items you will find in my shop.

Thanks for letting me interview you, Jackie!  I hope you all have enjoyed getting to know Jackie-go pay her a visit over at Sweetie Pie Pumpkin Noodle!
