{Who's That} Accessorize With Feather Girl and a GIVEAWAY!-CLOSED

I'm so happy to have my real-life friend Heather over here today to show you her cute creations.  I've known her for years!  She recently started an accessories shop where she sells her uber cute crocheted creations called Accessorize With Feather Girl.  When she asked if she could be a guest over here in response to my call for guests, I immediately said yes!  You will love her and the cute things she makes!  

Thanks for having me on your blog Courtney!!  I have known Courtney for a loooong time and am always amazed by her creativity!! 

Heather's the name, crochet is my game!!!  I am a stay at home mom and have been for the better part of the past 16 years.  I started crocheting when I was about 9.  My mom would make little projects here and there and thought that I needed to learn some kind of craft .... something that I could, eventually pass on to my daughter one day.  I use her for a lot of my pics, because she inspires me to be creative and I am passing my love of crochet on to her!

I picked up my crochet hook again in December of this past year, after seeing some scarves a friend had made.  I got to thinking ... hmmmm .... I bet I could do that!! So, I got online to get some ideas of things and started crocheting again.  I don't make up all of my own patterns, and will be posting links to the ones that I have used, as I appreciate the work that others have done to come up with these patterns, and want to give credit where credit is due!  I do, upon occasion, try to find ways to make things more to my liking, instead of using an exact pattern. 

One of my favorite things that I have done is a cell phone case.  These were inpired by my daughter, who is 9.

  

I love these little "bags" They started out as IPod Touch cases, my muse was looking for something to carry hers in and asked me to make her one ... I could tell that the first one I made her was not really what she was looking for.  And as I was working on something else, I came up with the pattern for this. Believe it or not, I was making baby shoes when I started playing with this style of case.  The first one I made was a solid color, then I started experimenting with colors, stitches and buttons and this was the result!  There is a back pocket that accomodates a cell phone or ID ..or whatever you want!! 

This is actually the first pattern I tried! It was just a plain hat, no embellishment on it, but anyone that knows me, knows that I love "accessories"!!  I changed the size hook from the original pattern and added a bow and Voila!!  I LOVE these hats, they are fun and can be made to match any outfit or jacket!!  I love doing them in stripes to match Tennessee's favorite team ... the Vols!! 

My daughter loves headbands, so when I saw something similar to this one online, I got busy!!  I love crocheting different styles of flowers or adding crochet bows for fun and flirty looks!!

These are just a few of the things that I make!  I love being able to make something that will bring a smile to someone's face!!

{Who's That} Meg the Grand

I've got a fab blog to share with you all today!  Meg from the blog Meg the Grand is here to share a cute t-shirt makeover.  She is a seamstress extraordinaire!  I lovelovelove the things she comes up with and I have a hunch you will, too :)  Without further ado, here's Meg!

Hello, Friends! My name is Meg and I blog over at Meg the Grand.

            

I'm a redhead whose signature color is orange and I love to sew and refashion! I learned how to sew in college while working in a costume shop and have been honing my skills on the Sew Weekly challenges this year.   I live in Chicago, Illinois with my fabulous boyfriend (who also doubles as my photographer). 

Today, I'm going to teach you how to make a flower basket top.

For this project, you will need:

·         A t-shirt that needs some love

·         A piece of lace (I chose a bouquet of flowers)

·         Ribbon (2 ½ feet should be enough for pleating around a larger motif)

·         Pins

·         Tailor’s chalk

·         Sewing machine

·         Ruler

I am using an Old Navy shirt that has been in my closet forever and had been in the giveaway pile.  I went for a more streamlined look and chose white lace with a white top, though you could mix t-shirt and lace colors. 

First things first:   Put your shirt on inside out and mark where the top of the bra clasp lies under your shirt.  I asked my boyfriend for assistance and wore a dark colored bra to assist him in finding the clasp.  This marking will be helpful when trying to position your lace piece.

Next, we will measure side seam to side seam.  My shirt measured 11 inches across the back.  This measurement, along with your bra marking, will help in centering the motif on your upper back. If you have a neat tattoo and want to make a window for that to be seen instead, your measurements will be different.  (Have a friend mark the outline of the tattoo instead of the next step)

Your lace motif will need to be cut out with at least ¼ inch seam allowance   The motif I used ended up being 7 inches across.

This next part can be done 1 of 2 ways: 

1.       Mark where your lace lays, remove lace, and cut out area.

2.       Sew the lace down on the right side of the shirt and then cut out t shirt from behind.

I chose to mark where my lace laid since I tend to get scissor happy and didn’t want to risk my awesome bouquet getting snipped.  I laid the lace face down on the inside of the shirt and marked the edges with tailor’s chalk.

Next, cut out your design’s outline, making sure to add at least ¼ to the edges for seam allowance.  I put a piece of cardboard in between the front and back of the shirt as a precaution.  (I promise this is not an advertisement for Kellogg’s Raisin Bran…because this cereal is from Aldi’s.  So this is an advertisement for Aldi’s Raisin Bran.  J)

Turn your shirt inside out so your chalk marks are hidden from sight.  Position your lace motif over the opening and pin the edges down.

 

Stitch around the edges, being careful to capture both the t-shirt and lace.

Trim the excess lace around the edges and grab your ribbon.  I began pleating the ribbon at the top of the motif, covering up both the stitching and the edge of the lace.  My pleats ended up being ½ inch each.

 

Continue around your motif.  This is the most time consuming part, but watching Hoarders totally takes your mind off it. (OMG I love Hoarders.  It makes me look at my fabric stash and go: “That’s not so bad after all.”  I have a problem, ya’ll.) When I came to the end of the ribbon, I tucked it under the first pleat to make a continuous loop. 

Now we sew!  I suggest sewing down the pleats rather than against – it makes for a smoother step and less chance your ribbon will be flipped up in random places.  I stitched down the center of the ribbon with a smaller stitch than I normally use.

Now we get to try it on and dance around to Journey!  Don’t stop beeelieevinnnn….

Just remember to put on sunscreen under that spot or else you may have some crazy sunburn lines… or don’t, and you have an instant conversation starter!  Ta da!

Since I'm hosting a Pennant Party, of course I HAD to show you a fun project I made that's accented with a pennant! I recently made a Starfish Flag {inspired by The Lettered Cottage}. Here's my version, made using Paint Stirrer Sticks! {You can buy them at Wal-Mart for about a quarter each!}

How do you like that Pennant Banner on my mantel? I won it from Day Dream Believers! Adorable, right!

After I made the flag, I decided I wanted to make it double sided so that I could get twice as much use out of it! When I flipped it over, it totally looked like a picket fence! So there was my new project! I painted the back white, added another paint stirrer and strung it with a pennant made from yardstick and twine!

Isn't it just as cute on my mantel as the starfish flag!

{Who's That} A Slip Shop

I'm so happy to introduce you all to an amazing Etsy shop, A Slip Shop!

Got a dress or skirt that could use just a couple inches more on the hem?  A Slip Shop has you covered-literally!  I asked shop co-owner, Kaity, to share a bit about A Slip Shop, how it got started and the lovely ladies behind it.  Here's what she had to say:

We are two stay-at-home moms who really enjoy fashion and we wanted to share something we love, our slips, with anyone interested. The shop began back in November of 2010. 

I really wanted to start an etsy shop and I wanted to do it with a girlfriend so we could have some fun, and make a little money on the side. I convinced Jene' to get involved and that's when we began researching and creating our product. We had a concept of what we wanted the slips to be and then we went to work to make it a reality. 

It was important to us to be able to provide a custom slip that could be tailored to each individual in size, length, and style (straight or a-line), as well as, provide a variety of options to accessorize any dress or skirt and add a little flair to one's ensemble. 

These slips are simply gorgeous!  I have a couple skirts and dresses that are in need of a A Slip Shop slip!  Stop on by the shop and see all of the prettiness for yourself-I guarantee there will be a slip you'll love!

{Who's That} She Wears Flowers

I’m so thrilled to be swapping blogs with Scraps and Scribbles today! I remember when I first discovered her blog and I couldn’t stop reading! She does so many fun things!

I’m Tammy from She Wears Flowers where I blog in the hopes that I can inspire others the same way I am inspired when I read craft blogs. I love to sew, wield the glue gun and spread on the Mod Podge. I am pretty willing to go with whatever crafty idea pops into my head. Most of my projects have tutorials and I tend to stick with quick, easy and very satisfying projects. I hope you’ll stop by and see what I’m up to!

Today’s project is super simple and has been fabulous for my kitchen! I have a really small kitchen—really small—so space is at a premium. Unfortunately, I probably don’t use it very well. I can’t reach the stuff in the little cupboards above my fridge so this is where I shove the stuff that I don’t use often—like cookie cutters and decorating supplies.  And by shove, I mean shove. (So embarrassing!)

I decided to do something about my mess and I started with all of those cookie cutters. I have a lot (Notice I didn’t show the other side of that cupboard? Much worse than this one!) so I thought I’d share how I organized them and made it easy to find one when I need it.

Materials

(I always seem to start with all of my materials, take a picture, then add more later—sorry!)

cookie cutters

binder

paper

plastic sleeves for binder

binder dividers with tabs

marker

cardstock

cover for binder (printable in instructions)

containers for cookie cutters

vinyl labels or regular labels

Instructions

Sort your cookie cutters into piles and decide what labels you will need. Since I used plastic shoe box sized containers, I wanted each pile to fit in that size box. This helped determine my groups.

Label your tabs for the dividers.

I put my dividers in alphabetical order in my binder. This helps when I am looking for something if the binder gets really full.

Trace each cookie cutter onto paper. (This is a great job for older children!) I only used one side of each paper and didn’t worry if I had some pages with big spaces. That way, I have plenty of room to add more as I buy them.

Insert each page, back to back, in the clear sleeves and put into binder in the right section.

You can flip through easily to see if you have a certain cookie cutter or to decide what you want to use for a project. The sections will coordinate with your containers so you will be able to find your cutter easily. Now I can quickly figure out if the frog is in my animal box or my fairy tale box without having to climb on a chair to pull them all down—I just check the binder first!

This also comes in really handy when you are using a different shape to make something. (Like hearts for ladybugs, for instance.)

Make a cover for your binder and then store it with your other kitchen books.

You can print this cover for personal use. Click the picture below to enlarge it and then print.

(You may want to copy the jpeg file into another program so you can change the size to make it work. I can’t figure out how to get it to print the right size. This file was made as an 8.5 x 11 inch size, but it tends to change by the time it is printed.)

Label your box so it is easily identifiable. I labeled mine on one end and the top.

There you go—done!

Your cookie cutters are separated into groups in containers that are easily accessible and a binder with all of the information also easily accessible. Here’s to hoping that when I get on the chair to reach above the fridge for something, I will actually be able to find it quickly!

Not the most exciting project, but so exciting to have these cookie cutters organized and the cabinet clutter tamed for a while!
